PANJIM: Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) will launch a campaign to remember the road traffic victims and to push for an efficient public transport system in the State so as to address the huge rise in fatalities in road accidents.

The campaign will begin on November 17 on the occasion of the ‘World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’ and end on November 26, the ‘World Sustainable Transport Day’.
The campaign will highlight the need for all government agencies to implement the recommendations of the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee and put in place the required institutional mechanisms.
Some of the key points of the campaign include: setting up of an exclusive website to be hosted by the Lead Agency and supported by the Directorate of Transport and Traffic Police to provide updates on court cases filed due to drunken driving, rash and negligent driving, hit-and-run cases which have resulted in grievous injuries and deaths; regular site inspections are to be conducted and reports prepared by the police station wise sub-committees on causes and analysis of motor vehicle accidents; publicise the Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme 2022 and to publicise the Good Samaritans Law which protects the person who saves the life of the road accident victims.
During the campaign, the GOACAN will mobilise volunteers of the village-based consumer forums and campus-based consumer welfare clubs to create awareness about the huge rise in fatalities in road accidents and to remember the road traffic victims in a special way.
The GOACAN will also reach out to the Village Panchayat and Municipal Road Safety and Traffic Management Committees so as to remember the victims and to also initiate a discussion and prepare an action-plan for an efficient public transport system in the villages and towns so as to reduce road accidents and fatalities.
