MARGAO: The gram sabha of Chandor village panchayat on Sunday demanded payment of compensation for the village farmers for the damage to crops on account of the breach in the Selaulim canal at Quepem.
At the meeting held on Sunday, gram sabha members took note of the losses sustained by the villager farmers for want of irrigation water to the crops under cultivation. They pointed out that over 60 farmers were the worst hit by the breach in the canal and demanded that the affected farmers be adequately compensated by the authorities.
The  gram sabha members asked the Panchayat to write to the concerned authorities the plight of the farmers due to the canal breach.
The gram sabha complimented the Panchayat for the clean up of the market road, but demanded to know the disposal of the debris accumulated at the site.
The sarpanch replied that the Panchayat will identify a site at Cavorim, which can be used as a land fill site for dumping of the debris.
The deputy sapranch Marcel Fernandes highly appreciated the development plan mooted by the Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik and appealed to the people to submit their developmental proposals for implementation.
The meeting also took cognizance of an illegal construction and demanded an inspection before going for its demolition.
