Row houses kick up a row at Rachol

MARGAO: The Rachol village gram sabha held on Sunday, presided by Sarpanch Joseph Vaz witnessed tense moments over the issue of granting construction license for a row house project at Rachol.
The opposition to the project, coming up opposite the Rachol seminary was raised by priests lead by Fr Victor Ferrao along with Fr Agnelo Pinheiro , Fr Mario Souza and locals who grilled Sarpanch Joseph Vaz for issuing NOC for the builder D.S. Naik
Fr Ferrao argued that the project is not in the interest of Rachol village.
It was witnessed that there was difference among the gram sabha members over the issue, with majority opposing the project, even as the sarpanch informed that the building have followed all the mandatory rules and regulations in force, adding that the NOC was issued only after obtaining legal opinion.
After a lengthy debate, majority of gram sabha members took a resolution demanding that NOC given for the project be revoked with the panchayat body agreeing to support the gram sabha.
Gram sabha also took a resolution that in future even if a local proposes a project that is against local interest that the same would be opposed and demanding panchayat body that such files be brought before gram sabha even as sarpanch informed that he had no powers to do so.
Further the gram sabha also took resolution objecting Mopa airport and demanding that the existing airport at Dabolim be upgraded
The Sunday gram sabha witnessed large number of villagers participation especial priests and seminaries from Rachol seminary who made their present felt for safe guarding the interest of village it was informed.
