MARGAO:  Art and Culture Minister, Dayanand Mandrekar on Sunday called for a full stop to inviting outstation artists to perform in Goa at the cost of local talent and artists.
He was addressing members of the cultural institutions from across the state at the Ravindra bhavan, Margao on Sunday morning.
“We have to stop roping in outstation artists and instead give encouragement to local artists. We have to give the local talent a platform. Maximum government funds go to outstation artists leaving hardly anything for the local talent. Our local artists deserve funds to showcase their talent”, Mandrekar said.
He made a fervent plea to the cultural institutions to utilize the government grants for the promotion of local artists.
“This will benefit our people. The department of art and culture has taken a decision to give a big boost for local art and artists”, he said.
While saying that that the department of Art and Culture has been liberal in sanctioning grants to institutions, Mandrekar, however, appealed to the Institutions to ensure that the estimates conform to the set parameters.
He pointed out that Margao benefited the most out of the schemes of Art and culture department in the last five years. He also said that the number of cultural institutions have shot up immensely over the last five years. Chairman of Ravindra Bhavan, Damu Naik also spoke.
Later, the representatives of cultural institutions put forth their grievances before the Art and Culture officials. A report on the deliberations would be later placed before the Minister for consideration.
