Chemical-laden tanker falls in river at Uguem, driver escapes

PERNEM: A tanker driver had a narrow escape on Friday night after his vehicle loaded with chemical crossed the bridge at Kadshi-Mopa and fell in the Uguem river. The vehicle was proceeding from Patradevi to Panjim.

The road here is narrow, steep and the driver’s failed judgment of the oncoming vehicle was the cause of the vehicle landing into the river. Showing alertness however, the driver jumped out of his cabin and amanged to hang on to the railings of the bridge. Locals Prashant Dhuri, Prashant Asolkar and Bhau Samant who were passing by rescued him.

“A similar incident had taken place here a month back where a cargo truck almost fell into the river. It was stuck half on the road and half off the cliff. We had requested authorities concerned and the MVR company to put up barricades or a temporary iron compound but it has not been done till date. There are no sign boards here either,” said former sarpanch and current panch Dayanand Gawandi.
