Just the other day, I was riding along the under construction National Highway 16 in Navelim. I was disgusted to see bags and sacks of garbage strewn all along the road. There are no streetlights, so under the cover of darkness people are dumping garbage, I presume. Sometimes they do so in broad daylight. On the Colva road one morning, I saw a car moving with its door open. Suddenly a bag of garbage was thrown out of the car into the gutter. Then again a little further on, another bag of garbage. People have no civic sense! All along Goa’s highways and by-lanes you see garbage and garbage.
And recently, I was surprised to read that Goa has been adjudged 3rd cleanest State in Swach Sarvekshan cleanliness ranking. Who are they fooling? The authorities should open their eyes to the filth everywhere and not send fake reports to the Centre. It is the government’s duty to provide facilities to dispose of garbage responsibly. The Navelim-Telaulim Panchayat conducts dry garbage collection just once a month with no wet waste collection. Inspite of the ban on single use plastic bags, most stores in Navelim hand out plastic bags for all groceries, even if it’s just a toothbrush!
