PANJIM: Hundreds of residents of Nauxim, as well as from elsewhere, along with civil society members, gathered at the Nauxim shore to register their opposition to the marina project on Tuesday evening.
Villagers fear the loss of livelihood, their traditional fishing business, hazardous effects to marine ecology and displacement of their houses if the project materialises.
The village has a large percentage of its residents involved in fishing. Many were present for the meeting, including senior citizens – women and men – and youth and other people from Goa. A police force was deployed at the site to avoid a law and order
situation.
Local fishermen said that if the marina project comes up in the village, it will spoil the serenity, peaceful environment of the area. They claimed that the project will have an adverse effect on marine ecology as well as on resources such as water, electricity and waste management.
During the meeting, civil society members opined that the local people were not taken into confidence on the marina. They said that local fishermen and other communities will suffer as their traditional fishing business will be affected. Some unique fish and marine species will have a bad effect if the marina project comes up, they said.
Activists, including Olencio Simoes, Rama Kankonkar and others were present for the meeting.
