CM Pramod Sawant Announces ID Cards for Goan Fishermen, Fish Vendors in Trade for Over 15 Years

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced that the Goa Government will issue identity cards to Goan fishermen and fish vendors who have been engaged in the trade for more than 15 years, with the aim of safeguarding local livelihoods and preserving the state’s traditional fishing occupation.

Speaking on the initiative, Sawant said the move is intended to protect those who have been dependent on the fishing sector for years and to ensure that Goans continue to have a strong presence in the trade.

The Chief Minister cautioned that failure to take timely action could result in outsiders gradually dominating the sector. He noted that many individuals who initially entered the industry as fish cutters and cleaners have subsequently become fish vendors, underscoring the need for measures to protect the interests of local fishing communities.

The proposed identity card system is expected to help recognise genuine Goan fishermen and fish vendors while strengthening efforts to preserve the state’s traditional fishing heritage and support those who rely on the occupation for their livelihood.
