CM to decide MMC chief: Sardessai
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, NOV 6
Giving up claims to any position of power in the Civic body, GPCC General Secretary Vijay Sardessai and his group of councilors-elect have authorised Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to decide on the candidate for the post of Margao Municipal Chairperson.
Briefing newsmen, Sardessai said that his councilors will give total freedom and wholeheartedly support the Chief Minister to decide who has to head the Margao Civic body. “I and my group have only asked the Chief Minister to sanction a development package of Rs 25 crore for Fatorda’s development in the coming year. The Chief Minister has agreed to our demand for development grant for Fatorda”, Sardessai added.
Besides the development package, Sardessai said his five-member group of councilors-elect has further asked the CM for a moratorium on acquisitions of agricultural fields in Fatorda Assembly segment, besides job reservations in government departments for the kith and kin of the land loser, whose agricultural fields were acquired in the past for various government projects in Fatorda. “The government should declare this job reservation policy at the earliest and desist from privatisation of proposed district hospital at Ambaji as the same would mean loss of government jobs which would benefit the kith and kin of the land losers”, he added. “There is a huge misconception that I am anti-agriculture. But, let me tell everyone that I am a graduate in Agriculture. I will see that there’s no more acquisition of fields from Fatorda”, he asserted.
While calling upon the government to develop the open spaces in Fatorda as Nana Nani parks to cater to the needs of senior citizens and to keep encroachments at bay, Sardessai also demanded setting up an effluent treatment plant at the SGPDA’s wholesale market by January 1, 2011 to tackle the stench in the market.
Replying to a question, Sardessai said the Margao Municipal administration has gone to the dogs due to a careless administration and demanded a full-fledged Chief Officer for the Civic body to provide a people-friendly administration.
Replying to another question, he said the councilors-elect Joseph Silva, Gonzaco Rebello, Bertha Cardozo, Sadanand Naik and Babita belongs to his group.
