MAPUSA: The Village panchayat of Colvale along with a health officer visited a site where alleged chemical and toxic waste water was being released from a huge scrapyard into a field near the Colvale power grid close to the National Highway.
The inspection carried out on Tuesday, was based on a complaint made by a farmer alleging that his field has been contaminated due to the discharge of chemical waste water. The complainant has also demanded for an inspection to be carried out and the necessary action to be initiated as it is hazardous to the health of the people living close to this spot.
“We carried out a site inspection to track the source. The chemical water being released into the field can be seen. It emits a foul odour and poses danger to the locals residing close by. They released chemical water from this huge scrapyard into a nearby field on Monday. We will be issuing the owner of the scrapyard a show-cause notice. After another15 days a demolition notice will be issued. We will be making a letter to the Goa State Pollution control Board and the police to initiate action in the matter. We will be also imposing a fine on them,” said Colvale Sarpanch, Nitin Kandolkar. The Heath Officer added that he will send a report to the GSPCB for further action.
