PANJIM: The Goa Congress on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to dismiss Union Home Minister Amit Shah from his position for allegedly insulting Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.

The memorandum, submitted through North Goa District Collector DrSnehaGitte, claims that during a special discussion marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, Shah made disparaging and disrespectful remarks about Dr Ambedkar. According to the Goa Congress, these remarks were made in the course of an attack on the Opposition, but in doing so, Shah demeaned one of India’s tallest leaders.
“The remarks made by the incumbent Union Home Minister are not only distasteful but also diminish the legacy of a leader who played a pivotal role in India’s independence and in shaping our Constitution,” said Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar.
Patkar further accused Shah and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trivialising crucial issues such as affirmative action, reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and the constitutional framework that guarantees these communities their rightful participation in society. “Such irresponsible comments, especially from the Union Home Minister, undermine the syncretic foundation of our country,” Patkar said.
The GPCC also claimed that Shah’s remarks had hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians. The party has demanded that the President immediately dismiss Shah from his position as Home Minister and compel him to issue a public apology for his comments.
