Cong demands white paper on fallow land, crop production in Goa

PANJIM: Alleging that false promises of the State government is not auguring well for the Agriculture area, the opposition Congress has demanded White Paper on fallow land and crop production of the State.

The Congress demanded that the government should declare the details of crop production and fallow land by releasing a White Paper. “We want to know whether fallow land is coming under cultivation, when the government is boasting of doing activities in this area,” it said.

Congress leader Moreno Rebelo also demanded that the government should release subsidy and support price to over 5,000 farmers and increase the financial assistance. The government announces schemes, farmers expect that they should get benefit of it, however they are not getting support from the agriculture department, he said adding that the Department of Agriculture should increase support price on paddy and coconut and subsidy to purchase machinery.

The Congress has suspected that the amendment to Town and Country Planning (TCP) Act and delay in disbursing subsidies to farmers could be a conspiracy to hand over farmland to real estate and outsiders by discouraging farmers. Farmers have not received their subsidies for the last two crops and the government is trying to strangle them by delaying their assistance, it said.

“It is foolish to urge youth to venture into agriculture without providing them any facilities. Actually government is trying to make us dependent on neighbouring States, so they get commission from agents while procuring vegetables and fruits.

‘Swayampurna Goem’ will not come in reality if the BJP government keeps its insensitive approach towards farmers,” the Congress alleged.
