MAPUSA: Congress leaders from Calangute including former MLA Agnelo Fernandes, former Sarpanch Joseph Sequira and Block President Benedict D’Souza informed that they have written to Director General of Narcotic Control Bureau reporting drug mafia cartel in Goa. The letter is addressed in behalf of Goa Pradesh Congress Party.
Congress pointed that Christmas is arriving and this festival season will bring in larger quantities of such elements and drugs. The peak time being December 15 to January 5 and invariably the stocks arrive prior for the season and asked to conduct operations without involving the local machinery since invariably the local machinery.
Addressing media, Fernandes said, “Two former ministers are on record that Michael Lobo is involved in drug trade. Even we had highlighted it and had also asked the Goa CM to sack Michael Lobo and conduct inquiry on this trades however, it’s been 20 days now but till there is no action taken,” said Fernandes.
“We have now written letter to Director General of Narcotic Control Bureau reporting drug mafia cartel in Goa,” said Fernandes.
Congress also pointed the several seizures of drugs, which is being made virtually on daily basis shows that there is clear political patronage without which such flourishing business could never have been undertaken with any fear for law or the enforcement agencies.
Congress further said that Goa has been on the radar for drug and psychotropic substance business most coming from other places of India and even from across international borders.
Congress said that NCB has been keeping close watch on people involved in the drug trade however, it is fruitless if the big fish involved in the trade are not trapped.
The drug trade has got its tentacles on not only local politicians who behave like the Dons of such mafias but also in the police force who are often recipients of a monthly sum and few seizures are reported routinely to show as if they are pro-active, when in fact they are hands in gloves with such criminal elements, alleged Congress.
Congress stated that they do not desire to turn Goa into another Mexico and have innocent citizens being caught in cross fire. It is time to act now. Failing which, this will percolate across generations and the attempt to eliminate or stop such a menace will become irreversible and requested to study the modus operandi and take the drug lords into custody.
