Convict escapes, lady constables suspended

VASCO: Two lady constables and a lady head constable have been suspended after a woman convicted in a cheating case escaped from Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where she was referred to for treatment. Additionally, the woman had abandoned her newborn at the hospital to escape from the custody of the police escort cell.

According to information, convict Shalaka Gawas (23), resident of Netarde-Sawantwadi, had served her sentence at Sada sub jail from December 1, 2014 to March 20 2015. However, she was again booked and convicted by a court after she was proved guilty under Section 420 of IPC on August 6. She was pregnant at the time, and on November 11, delivered her baby. 
“On November 13, she complained of pain and was admitted to GMC. However, at around 5.30 pm on November 20, she escaped from the custody of the escort police, abandoning her 20-day-old child in the hospital,” said a source.
Constables Pooja Gawas and Suvarna Naik and a lady head constable attached to the police escort cell were suspended on November 22 pending an inquiry, while efforts are being made trace the 
convict.
