PERNEM: The Mandrem police conducted a raid in Arambol on Friday and arrested Sharmin Shaikh, also known as Maria, a native of Gujarat, for allegedly trafficking girls for prostitution and also rescued two women who were allegedly pushed into the nefarious sex trade.
Acting on reliable information that Sharmin Shaikh alias Maria from Ahmedabad, Gujarat had procured girls from West Bengal and she was supplying them to customers for prostitution near the parking area in Arambol.
The police conducted a raid with the assistance of ARZ NGO and rescued the girls, aged 34 and 25 and from Hotel Laximi House at Arambol, Pernemr. Both the victims have been lodged in the Protective Home, Apna Ghar, Merces. The Mandrem Police have registered the case against Sharmin Shaikh under Section 143(3) of BNS and under Sections 4, 5 and 7 of Immoral traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
“Sharmin was presently residing at Arambol and was arrested for forcing the victims into prostitution and earning revenue from the sex trade through her customers, basically tourists,” a senior police officer said.
The entire operation was carried out under the supervision of SP North Akshat Kaushal, IPS and under the guidance of Pernem SDPO Ashish Shirodkar.
