MARGAO: The meeting called by Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer (CO) Rohit Kadam to discuss various civic in Margao with the public was abruptly cancelled leaving the attendees disappointed.

The Chief Officer had called a meeting on Monday to discuss the issues like traffic management, solid waste management, scrap yard, abandoned vehicles laying in the city and sanitation issues. He had appealed to various prominent locals to attend the meeting so that they can provide the civic body with some valuable suggestions to overcome the issues.
Speaking to media persons, Melita Coehlo, a Margao local said that she is very much disappointed to notice that the meeting has been cancelled due to the alleged objection from the councillors.
“I was here to give my suggestions to the civic body, as the people of Margao are facing hardships due to unresolved issues. People’s participation is a must for the betterment and development of the town,” said Coehlo.
Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) Savio Coutinho said that it was obvious that the meeting was postponed and there was pressure on the Chief Office so that people are not involved in resolving the issues.
“It is much unexpected from our town fathers and the leaders who are controlling the municipality. This initiative of CO to get the locals involved in resolving the issue for the batter Margao was an appreciative one,” said Coutinho.
He also blamed the civic body for not constituting the several committees, which are mandatory as per the rules, involving the locals.
“So how can the civic body expect the city to grow without public participation?” he asked.
“I had informed the CO that almost all the councillors are not happy with the meeting as they are not taken into confidence,” said Chairperson Lyndon Pereira.
Councillors claimed that they were not taken into confidence nor the issue of the meeting was discussed with the Chairperson.
The CO denied all the rumours and allegations and said that the meeting has been cancelled only because of an urgent meeting at Panjim.
“Meeting will be held in the next couple of days.,” he assured.
