MARGAO: Come new financial year and residents of Cuncolim will have to pay garbage collection fees to the local civic body.
Amidst serious reservations raised by a group of ruling Councillors, the CMC on Wednesday adopted a resolution to levy garbage collection fees on the 6000 residential houses spread across the jurisdiction.
CMC had initially proposed to levy Rs one per day on every household in lieu of collecting the waste. But, after a group of ruling councillors expressed their reservations on the proposal to levy garbage collection fees, Chairperson Devendra Desai agreed for an annual fixed amount of Rs 200 for waste collection.
“The CMC had no option than to impose the garbage collection fees to make up for the huge expenditure on door-to-door waste collection. We have engaged 31 workers, whose salary budget comes to Rs 5 lakh a month”, Desai explained to the councillors.
