MARGAO: Frustrated with their longstanding efforts to bring attention to their concerns regarding alleged pollution caused by manufacturing units in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, local residents have decided to take to the streets and demand immediate action.
Residents have invited all those concerned with the issue to gather at the main gate of Cuncolim Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) on Sunday, October 22, at 10 am.
The demonstration aims to raise awareness among the public and shed light on the severe pollution allegedly caused by factories in Cuncolim IDC, which are accused of violating industrial operation norms and improper disposal of industrial waste.
For nearly two decades, residents of Cuncolim have been expressing their apprehensions about pollution and its potential impact on public health. People living near the industrial estate have lodged complaints about unbearable foul odours, the disposal of untreated water into drainage systems, canals, and fields, and the pumping of wastewater into bore wells by fish processing industries.
“Thousands of hazardous tons of industrial waste have been left exposed in an open environment for years, leading to severe health issues among locals and irreparable environmental damage. As a last-ditch effort to alert the government, we have organized this awareness drive,” said Vijay Prabhu, a local resident.
