Cutbona group demands action against night fishing

MARGAO: Those opposing the use of LED lights at Cutbona jetty have asked the State fisheries department to take action against the violation of a government order with regard to night fishing.

After receiving the copy of the government order under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the opposition pointed out that the rules clearly prohibit mechanised fishing at night in the areas in the specified government notification.
They further question then how is the use of LED lights allowed when the same LED light are used at night, at a time when fishing by trawlers are banned.
They have stated that the fisheries department should thus initiate action for violating the ban on night fishing rule and in that clamp down on the use of LED lights.
Meanwhile traditional fishermen who reside and work in Betul have raised queries about the jetty expansion and the length and size of the retaining wall to be built by the fisheries department.
