MARGAO: Independent MLA Vijai Sardessai and his arch rival Damu Naik has come face to face over the construction of a sulabh toilet at the migrant inhabited Pajifond of Fatorda constituency.
While the MLA has accused Damu for putting spokes in the toilet construction and has petitioned to the office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue, Damu said the toilet is being construction illegally without following the laid down norms.
“The proof of Naik’s involvement can be ascertained from the show cause notice served to me by the deputy Collector, Margao Sangeeta Naik, which clearly states that Damu Naik had telephonically complained to her regarding construction of the toilet on flimsy grounds of there not being a board, displaying the nature of the works being carried out at the location:, Vijai told the media.
He demanded to know how a BJP leader can scuttle the toilet project in connivance with the administration when the Prime Minister has vowed to lay heavy stress on sanitation, especially in the slums. He claimed that work on the toilet project, which has been cleared by Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, has been sabotaged when it has all relevant NOCs for its construction.
Damu, however, begged to differ. He blamed the Fatorda MLA for indulging in illegal activities in the constituency and admitted that he had lodged complaint against the toilet project for alleged violation of the construction norms. “The MLA should tell us whether the land for the toilet project was demarcated by the health services and whether the project had the technical clearances from the SGPDA or license from the local Margao Civic body”, Damu questioned. He demanded to know why the MLAs has not made efforts to connect the houses to the underground sewerage line and is instead insisting on the Sulabh toilet.
