MARGAO: Mechanised boat owners have welcomed the government’s plan to sell fish in selected outlets at reasonable rates, but said they are opposed to any ban on its export.
President of Cutbona Boat Owners Association, Patrick D’Silva, said that the boat owners wholeheartedly welcome the government decision to open outlets in major towns for the sale of fish at affordable rates. “We feel that the common man should get fish in the market at affordable rates. Boat owners will fully cooperate with the government on this count,” he said.
He, however, said it is now for the government to unveil its plan how it intends to go about selling the fish in the outlets. “This is a question for the government to decide. We are ready to sell fish at the rates prevailing at the fish landing jetties,” he added.
On demands to ban export of fish, Patrick said the boat owners export fish since they get a better price. “But at the same time the boat owners would make fish available to government agencies for sale in the special counters,” he added.
The Cutbona Boat Owners Association president said the government can work out a system wherein the subsidy given to the boat owners is linked to the sale of fish to the government outlets.
