Defectors will not be readmitted: Cong

PANJIM: Appreciating Poriem MLA Pratapsing Rane for his loyalty towards the Congress party, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Thursday slammed former Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro and former MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco for ditching the party when they were required the most.

Speaking to reporters, Chodankar alleged that Faleiro and Lourenco quit the Congress for their selfish gains. Selfish leaders like them left the party when it was their time to give back to the party, which he added had given them everything. But these selfish leaders saw benefits like retirement package and bags (of money) offered by other political parties and resigned from the Congress.

Chodankar appreciated the decision of Rane to contest the upcoming Assembly elections bowing to the wishes of the Poriem Block Congress Committee, North Goa District Congress Committee and his workers and supporters.

“Despite of family pressure he (Rane) stood by the Congress Party during difficult time which needs to be appreciated,” he said adding Rane sacrificed his personal interest for the cause of the party.

To a question, Chodankar reiterated that defectors will not be readmitted into the Congress party. “We have taken a bold decision not to readmit defectors into Congress Party. Let us destroy this virus of defection once and for all,” he said.

The GPCC president also disclosed that the second list of candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections will be declared next week. He also ruled out the possibility of surrendering seat won by the Congress Party in the last Assembly polls to its alliance partners.
