MARGAO, SEPT 15
With elections for the two Zilla Panchayats in the state scheduled to take place in March 2010, the process of delimitation of constituencies and reservation of seats for both the North and South Goa ZPs will commence soon.
State Election Commissioner, P M Borkar said the election body would hold the ZP polls somewhere around March after the process of delimitation of constituencies and reservation of seats is completed by the Director of Panchayats.
Borkar told Herald that the Director of Panchayats would undertake the exercise of delimitation of constituencies wherever required in certain areas, especially in the North Goa ZP body.
As far as the reservation of seats is concerned, the State Election Commission has said that it is for the Director of Panchayats to decide on the seat reservation for women, SCs and STs, besides the Other Backward Communities.
The term of the current ZP ends around March and the State Election Commission will hold the polls to put a new body in place. Though sources in the know say the Election Commission may hold the polls tentatively on March 7, the State Election Commissioner declined to comment on the election date, saying the date will be decided after the process of delimitation and reservation of seats is over.
