MARGAO: Cutbona area of Velim village witnessed gloom as dengue claimed the life of a 28-year old woman on Thursday.
Josima Cardozo, who was battling for life after she was hit by dengue on December 11, breathed her last in the hospital this morning. A total of 11 persons from Cutbona, including panchayat ward member Veena Cardozo and her son, were affected by dengue since the first case was reported in the fishing hub on November 25.
Cutbona had been in the news since the last fortnight after a number of dengue cases were reported from the locality.
When contacted for comments over the development, Sarpanch Melvyn Sanches said he has intimated the health department about the situation, with a request to take remedial measures in the locality. He, however, said that no fresh case of dengue has been reported from the area in the last 4-5 days.
When his attention was drawn to the demand of the local residents to close down the net-mending sheds and to take out migrant labourers from the locality, the Sarpanch said he would write to the district collector, fisheries department as well as Salcete Block Development Officer to conduct a joint inspection and have an interaction with residents.
He said the Velim panchayat will call a special meeting of the panchayat to discuss dengue and migrant workers at the Cutbona fishing jetty.
Replying to a question, he said the village panchayat had made arrangements
to get the teams from the Directorate of Health Services thrice to Cutbona after dengue first raised its ugly head on November 25. “The panchayat has now engaged a private agency to carry out chemical spraying of
the entire locality”,
Sanches added.
