VASCO: Fish vendors prefer squatting along the roadside to conduct their business as the newly-built fish market at Velsao appears to be “partially complete”.
Fish and vegetable vendors from the village prefer the Velsao main road, to carry out with their business which they claim attracts more customers.
Velsao, Pale and Issorcim Sarpanch Henrique D’Mello said, “Fish vendors who sit outside have not been told to sit inside the premises as the premise is not fully complete.”
He informed that the fish market premise is almost ready but only the toilet facility is on hold as it requires NOC from the church authorities.
“Our parish priest has already written to the church authorities for their NOC as the property belongs to the church. Once we get the NOC, we will build the toilet facility at the market and the premises will be made operational,” the sarpanch added.
When contacted, some fish vendors said, “The present fish market at Velsao is small and cannot accommodate many fish vendors and ramponnkars.”
When asked why they sit on the roadside, they said, “We get customers easily and this is beneficial for our business therefore we take the risk of doing business here.”
An elderly fisherman stated, “fish vendors should not sit next to major roads and especially if that place is an accident prone zone. If accidents take place with fish vendors who sit next to roads then police should be held responsible for the accidents.”
