MARGAO: Detection of crimes under the Indian Penal Code has improved in the 16 police stations coming under the South Goa District headed by Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas. While last year in the first six months the crime detection rate was 80.51 per cent in the first six months of the current year it has gone up to 86.77 per cent.
Crimes reported to the police stations have also dropped this year as 529 cases were reported of which 459 were detected while last year in the first six months 672 cases were reported of which 541 were detected.
While last year 10 murder cases were reported, this year six have been reported and all six are detected. Colva and Curchorem Police Stations had two murder cases each while one such case was reported at Margao Town and Verna police stations.
Seven cases of attempt to murder were reported this year with two of them at Ponda police station and one each at Margao Town, Maina Curtorim, Curchorem, Vasco and Mormugao police stations. Only one case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was registered at Ponda police station.
Incidentally the South Goa Police detected 18 of the 19 rape cases registered this year and the only one not detected is because the minor girl has been taken away by her boyfriend to his native place. Vasco police station registered five rape cases while Colva and Fatorda Police stations registered three each.
Of the 48 fatal accidents registered police have detected the person responsible in 44 cases and of the 111 other accident cases registered, police have found the cause 108 accidents. Incidentally police have registered 14 cases of assault on public servant with four cases being registered at Canacona Police Station.
In the last six months not a single case was registered for receiving stolen property, passing counterfeit money, escaping from legal custody, administering stupefying drugs and anti corruption.

Minor crimes
Personnel at the 16 police stations in South Goa have worked really hard to book minor cases which are generally registered only when police go out in the field and catch the culprits. While last year they registered 19,288 cases in the first six months, this year as on 30th June 95,578 cases are registered.
Only four cases are not detected this year which are two registered under the Town & Country Planning Act by the Sanguem and Canacona police respectively and the other two undetected were under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act registered at Fatorda Police station and Vasco Railway police station.
The police have started acting against gambling in the district as 235 cases of matka gambling were registered in the first half of this year as against the 179 booked in whole of 2017. While last year altogether only 3 cases of other gambling were registered, this half year three have been registered.
While 28 habitual criminals have signed good behaviour bond this year under Section 110 of CrPC, last year 13 had signed it and booked 14 cases against people causing nuisance to the public under Sectopn 133 of CrPC which is the same number of cases booked for the whole of last year. While police intervened in 32 property disputes this year, last year they had booked only 19 such cases.
There is a quantum leap in the tenant verification done by the police this year. In the last six months police have filled up 48,750 tenant verification forms as against the only 13,223 filled last year. This year police have sent all these forms along with 230 pending forms of last year to the respective police stations for their say.
It is indeed unfortunate that the District Collector did not take any action in the 466 cases referred to it under Section 188 against landlords for failure to fill up the tenant verification forms.
