PANJIM: Reiterating that
Congress will not enter into any alliance for the 2017 State Assembly
elections, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Digvijay Singh
on Thursday hit out at regional political outfits. He said “regional parties
are in politics only to satisfy their personal aspirations and have nothing to
do with State development.”
Addressing media persons in
Panjim, Singh said the role of regional parties in State politics, especially
in a small State like Goa, is limited to power and there is no other objective.
“The only objective is to come to power for ministerial berths,” he said citing
an example of how Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) used Congress and now
BJP to stay in power.

“These small parties are
here only to satisfy their personal aspirations more than the political
aspirations,” Singh said ruling out the possibility of an alliance with the
regional parties for the 2017 Assembly elections.
Singh, the Goa Desk in
charge, also categorically stated there is no point in having an alliance with former
ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Singh was on two day visit
to Goa wherein he reviewed the organizational setup of the Congress party at
the block level. On Wednesday he held a series of meetings with workers from all
South Goa constituencies, while on Thursday he meet block members from North
Goa.
Gearing up for the Assembly
polls, Singh said the process of selection of candidates will be initiated at the
block committee level, wherein tickets will be given based on political
analysis. “This time, we are not going to invite applications from deserving
candidates. The block committees will select the best candidate and propose the
name to the Congress high command,” he said.
The AICC leader said the
names of the candidates would be announced well in advance before the date for filing
of nominations for the elections.
Reacting on the Patiala House
Court incident, Singh said the incident at JNU and the
violence by BJP supporters outside the court has exposed the fascist face of
the party. “The act has exposed the blatant fascist face of BJP and Sangh, who
have no respect for law and the Supreme Court,” he said.
