PANJIM: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar made a surprise visit to the Malim jetty in an attempt to discuss and resolve the issues of fishermen on Monday.

After inspecting the jetty, Halarnkar informed that a new floating jetty will be constructed adjacent to the existing Malim Jetty on Britona, Penha-De-Franca side by spending Rs 10 to 15 crore under PM Matsya Sampda Yojana to ease load on Malim Jetty. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) regarding the project has already been sent to the Union government, he said.
During his visit to the sub-office of the Fisheries Department, the Minister took a review of the existing basic facilities on the jetty. He has assured the stakeholders of resolving all the small and big issues.
The work of expansion of the present Malim jetty will be restarted soon since the contractor who was doing the work earlier had abandoned it. Hence, the work will now be restarted through Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), he said.
When asked about the infiltration of non-Goan fishing trawlers in Goa waters, Halarnkar claimed that now the boats do not enter Goan waters. “Fishermen have been informing the Coastal Security police and nearest police stations regarding the violations. We have shared the contact numbers of concerned police to all the fishermen,” he said.
