PANJIM: The Anti Narcotics Cell of the Goa Police raided a kiosk at Anjuna beach and seized illegal drugs – 24 LSD papers – valued at around Rs 1.24 lakh.
A case has been registered under Section 22 (c) of NDPS Act 1985 and the accused Rocky Fernandes from Anjuna has been remanded to 9 days judicial custody.
According to the police, on Saturday between from 8.15 pm and 12 pm, PSI Dinesh Gadekar and ANC staff raided a kiosk at Anjuna and caught Fernandes with 24 LSD papers weighing 0.26 gms.
A day earlier, a Congress office bearer had claimed that more locals than foreigners are involved in the trade than tourists with Herald highlighting that most of the drug hotspots in the State –including Anjuna – are represented in the Assembly by long-time BJP MLAs, many of who are senior ministers in the government.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee organising secretary Durgadas Kamat said, “In 2013-14, a total of 62 locals and 23 foreigners have been arrested and this shows that more Goans are involved in the drug trade than tourists.”
“This task force will help stop the growing network of politicians, police-peddler nexus in Goa, while also keeping a watch on EDM festivals along the coastal belt of the State. We need strong will power to resolve to make Goa drug free by 2016,” Kamat had argued, alleging that the drug trade has been thriving along the North Goa coastal belt.
