PANJIM: Putting a huge question mark on the syllabus and the quality of education in Goa, the Directorate of Accounts has said that none of the 8000 candidates who applied for post of accountants cleared the initial exams.
As per information, there were around 80 posts for which 8000 candidates had applied and answered the initial exams on January 7, 2018. However, to utter dismay of everyone, Accounts Department said none of them could clear the exam.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by the above read notification, I hereby declare that no candidate that appeared for the initial recruitment examination for the post of accountant (direct recruits) held on 07/01/2018, has secured the minimum qualifying marks necessary for passing in as prescribed under para (5) of the notification dated 31/10/2017,” says a order of Director Accounts.
As per information available 15,293 applications were sold and 10,712 candidates applied and finally 8000 appeared for the exams held in January.
Out of the 80 posts, 43 were in the general category, 21 reserved for OBC, 9 reserved for Scheduled Tribe, 2 reserved for Scheduled Caste and one each for handicapped, freedom fighters children and ex-servicemen.
Sources in the department revealed that the candidates had to score minimum of 50 (Paper I) and 60 in (paper II) to qualify out of 100 marks.
Speaking to Herald on condition of anonymity, a candidate said that the paper was very difficult and was difficult to even understand. “It was a paper of the standard of civil services category and during the exams I could see many candidates walking out within minutes of the exam starting.”
Paper I was English and general knowledge which included report writing, general knowledge, précis writing, business communication, essay/composition, grammar and general knowledge.
Paper II was divided in three sections A – mathematics, B – economics and C – bookkeeping and accountancy.
Sources revealed that the question paper was set by Goa Education Development Corporation. However, efforts to contact GEDC officials proved futile.
