A casual gathering turned into a nightmare in Kazur, Sanguem, on Sunday when a 22-year-old girl was fatally shot after a group of five friends from Sankhali alleged ly began playing with a rifle found inside a house. According to Quepem Police, the group had gone to visit one of their friend’s sister’s house for some work in Kazur. Police said that after spending some time together, they found a rifle inside the house. In a careless act, they be gan handling the weap on and even fired two rounds while playing with it. In a shocking turn of events, one of them, Shwet Gawde (22), al legedly pointed the ri fle towards a girl, Tanvi Ghadi (22), and jokingly asked if he should shoot. However, he then pulled the trigger, and the bullet struck Tanvi in the neck. Family members immediately rushed her to the hospi tal in a private vehicle. On the way, they encountered a po lice patrolling team. They stopped the police vehicle and after an enquiry, the police shifted her into their vehicle and took her to the Quepem Primary Health Centre. Sadly, due to severe blood loss, the doctor declared her dead.
The body was sent to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for a postmortem examination. “Our police vehicle was on patrolling duty in the Kazur area when a car suddenly stopped our vehicle. After being informed about the incident, our police immediately shift ed the injured girl into our police vehicle and rushed her to the hospital, where doctors later declared her dead. During preliminary enquiry, we learned that the girl had sustained a gunshot injury to her neck, allegedly fired by her boy friend. A group of friends had visited one of their friend’s sister’s house, where a firearm was found at the location. While handling the weapon, the youth reportedly pointed the gun at the girl and fired. The firearm used in the inci dent has not yet been identified. Further investigation is currently underway,” – said Quepem PI Prashal Desai. Quepem Police have detained the accused, and further investigation is underway. Authorities are trying to determine whether the incident was an accidental firing or a deliberate act.
