MARGAO: The Food and Drugs Administration officials on Wednesday held a check of fish sold at the SGPDA retail market after a complaint was made to them regarding frozen fish being sold at the market.
The fish samples tested by FDA was found to be without formalin and suitable for consumption.
The complainant while speaking to media said that he was worried of frozen fish being sold maybe formalin laced fish. He further said that the FDA responded very quickly and the team arrived at the wholesale market to check the fish.
Vendor and Retail Fishermen Association President Felix Gonsalves said “The fish we are selling here has been brought from the factory in Goa. We don’t sell imported fish here. I have produced the bill of the fish we were selling today here,” said Felix.
He further told that apart from the fish purchased from the factory other fish that are displayed at the retail fish market are from local fisherman and ramponkaars.
Meanwhile, a complain signed by the general secretary and local office bearers of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has been submitted to Canacona police station on Wednesday against the FDA director Jyoti Sardesai, Ibrahim Maulana and others for commission of offence punishable under the prevention of corruption act on the issue of formalin laced fish.
It is stated in the complaint that the FDA team after conducting spot analysis of the fish samples drawn from 17 trucks at wholesale fish market at Margao, concluded that formalin is found and the concerned agents dealing with this trucks were instructed not to sell this fish laced with formalin.
The complaint has been submitted under 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

HC to hear petition on Monday
Amidst the ongoing debate on the ban on import of fish, owing to the formalin scare, the High Court of Bombay at Goa will on Monday hear a petition that seeks a judicial inquiry into the matter. Petitioner Shivraj Kamat Tarcar, a Panjim resident, had moved the court on Monday seeking a judicial inquiry into the events that unfolded since July 12 and a ban on the import of fish till the Food & Drugs Administration in the State is equipped with facilities to ensure fish sold in Goa is not laced with chemicals. The petition came up before the division bench for submission on Wednesday after which the matter was adjourned for a hearing next week.
