A Field Day-cum-Demonstration Programme showcasing the improved rice variety ‘Sahyadri Kempumukthi’ was held at Saligao, Bardez, introducing Goan farmers to a high-yielding and disease-resistant paddy option.
The event was jointly organised by the Seed Unit of Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga, and the Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Goa (ATMA) – North Goa Zonal Agriculture Office, Bardez, Mapusa.
The programme aimed to familiarise local farmers with the newly developed Sahyadri Kempumukthi variety, which has shown excellent performance in yield and resistance to major paddy diseases.
Local farmer Shri Dinu Tandel of Sangolda successfully cultivated the variety under the supervision of agricultural officers. The crop, which matures in about 125 to 130 days, produces red grains similar to the popular Jyoti variety, but with significantly higher productivity and improved disease resistance.
Farmers attending the demonstration expressed satisfaction with the results, noting that Sahyadri Kempumukthi could become a viable alternative to traditional varieties. Officials from the Agriculture Department encouraged more cultivators to adopt the new paddy type in the upcoming seasons to enhance productivity and resilience.
The initiative forms part of the Directorate of Agriculture’s continued efforts to promote improved, high-yielding, and climate-suited rice varieties across Goa, ensuring better returns for the farming community.
