PANJIM: Three incidents of fire were reported across the State on New Year day in Goa. A major fire was reported at Junaswada, Mandrem where dry grass caught fire caused due to fireworks display to welcome the New Year.
According to the locals, the fire was triggered due to sparks from fireworks by a hotel. Local villagers swiftly contained the blaze, preventing further damage or injuries.
The locals complained that the Pernem fire tender took long time to reach to the spot and have now demanded a full-fledged fire station in Mandrem. Locals alleged that the incidents of fire have increased in the village and there have been suspected attempts to covert these areas into settlement.
In another incident two shacks were gutted in fire at Gaurawado, Calangute on Wednesday morning.
The shack owners have been identified as Melvin Silveira and Catalina Fernandes. No one was injured in the incident. The locals said that the fire broke out during fireworks to mark the New Year celebrations.
In third incident, darkness engulfed the house of Pratiksha Pednekar at Ghotaneshwar wada, Lakhere, Bicholim, on New Year. A fire broke out in her house causing major damage. The kitchen and the roof were burnt. Electrical appliances, utensils, and clothes were burnt causing a loss of about Rs 1 lakh.
Neighbours alerted the owners and also called the Bicholim fire brigade, which put off the blaze.
