Fire dept flooded with calls in 12 hours

The stormy weather since Monday evening wreaked havoc in the State keeping the helpline in the control room of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services ringing and the personnel on their toes.

As per the latest figures released by Fire Department, they recorded 269 calls in 12 hours from 7am to 7pm.

The officials said that an industrial unit employee died after a tree came crashing down on his moving car early Tuesday morning. The fire personnel had to cut the tree trunk to get the victim out of the car.

Of the calls, the highest 36 were from Canacona, the taluka which has always faced the wrath of heavy rains and floods.

As of late evening, fire personnel had cleared 142 calls, attended to 18 calls while 108 are pending. 

Most of the calls are related to falling of trees and branches on the roads and houses.
