Fire once again engulfed the Sonsodo garbage dumping yard on Saturday evening, giving anxious moments for the contractor engaged to cap the site with tarpaulin.
The fire was spotted in the evening and it came close to the area where the contractor had capped the site with tarpaulin. As the fire threatened to spread to the area capped by tarpaulin, alert workers deployed at the site immediately saw to it that the capping material was removed to a safe area.
No damage, however, was done to the tarpaulin, sources in the know said, even as the workers requisitioned a fire tender at the site as a precautionary measure.
The Margao Municipal Council has tendered the work of capping the Sonsodo site at a whopping cost of Rs 17 lakh. Fears, however, are expressed in many quarters that the contractor be directed to go slow in the capping work in view of the fire and smoke billowing from the site.
