PANJIM: Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Tuesday conducted surprise checks of fish samples sold in Panjim and Margao fish market. This is the first surprise inspection by FDA after it stopped checks of fish imported from neighbouring States.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that nine samples of prawns, squids, croaker fish, sardines, sole fish, mackerels, silver fish, white pomfret and butter fish were tested. “All the samples cleared FDA test,” he said.
Following the formalin-fish fiasco, FDA had started daily checks of imported fish at the State borders on August 4. After a month long drive, it had stopped the checks due to shortage of staff.
“If there is constant check, one cannot work. However, we have to be cautious to see that food safety standards are maintained and people consume quality fish,” the Minister had said.
Rane had announced random checks at borders, market, restaurants and all those establishments where fish is sold.
