CANACONA, SEPT 27 Deputy Director of Fisheries Dr Sharmila Monteiro has stated that the schemes launched by the government are for the eligible citizens to drive its maximum benefits and improve their living standard.

Deputy Director of Fisheries Dr Sharmila Monteiro has stated that the schemes launched by the government are for the eligible citizens to drive its maximum benefits and improve their living standard.
Dr Monteiro was speaking at the launching of Silver Jubilee year celebrations of the formation of All Goa Khestriya Pagi Samaj (AGKPS) at Canacona on Friday in the presence of Canacona Mamlatdar Vinayak Volvoikar and AGKPS President Shekar Pagi.
Dr Monteiro explained various benefits available for the fishing community, including facilities of study tours, subsidy, insurance schemes, etc.
Department of fisheries officials distributed over 1,000 cheques for the beneficiaries of Savings-cum-Relief Scheme to the members of fishermen community.
Under the scheme, central and state governments contribute equally, 50% of Rs 150 per month (Rs 37.50 each per month) for eight months, while the other 50% is contributed by individual scheme holder.
The AGKPS was started in 1985 to approach the government of various grievances of the community and this year, the association is celebrating its silver jubilee.
According to sources, various programmes are lined-up by the association throughout the year.
AGKPS President Shekar Pagi requested the directorate of fisheries to extend all the available schemes and subsidies to the members of association at the minimum hassle, which could go a long way in improving standards of their once backward community.
Canacona Mamlatdar Vinayak Volvoikar also spoke on the occasion.
