CURCHOREM: During the council meeting held on Monday, the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Councillors decided to stage a dharna along with Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral in front of the Curchorem electricity department office if the street lights are not repaired by September 6.
Speaking to the media after the meeting Chairperson Felix Fernandes said they had already written a letter to the chief minister and executive engineer including assistant engineer of electricity department requesting them to repair or replace the street lights in the municipal jurisdiction as most of them were not working. The area would be in total darkness and no action had been initiated and that forced the councilors to stage a dharna along with the MLA.
Fernandes also revealed the owners of the ice cream parlours in Curchorem had been instructed to remove all the curtains and partitions erected between the tables and curtains. They had to also cut the size of the back support given to the seat to neck level so that customers sitting in the parlour are visible. This had to be done within eight days. “This decision has been taken following the letter we received from the Curchorem police informing that illegal activities are going on in the parlours.” Informed Fernandes.
Taking another decision, the council asked the school students to make paper bags and kept a prize for the school/students who would make the best bag. “We have already taken a meeting with the school’s heads and requested them to ask the students to make paper bags and these bags will be distributing free of cost on September 10 to the people who are coming in the market for shopping.” Said Fernandes who added that after the Ganesh Chatruthi around one lakh cotton cloth bags will be distributed in the market as well as in municipal wards to sensitize the people about the need to stop using plastic.
The Council also decided not to allow the lessees from the old municipal building near the railway station to occupy it during the Chatruthi festival. “The PWD has already declared it as unsafe and also the High Court order is there stating not to allow them as the building is not safe and therefore we vacated them to demolish and construct a new building,” said Fernandes.
