MAPUSA: It may sound strange but the fact is that Mapusa residents are without a library for nearly a year.

It may be recalled that in September 2019, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) had resolved to handover the old municipal building housing the Athaide Library to Art and Culture Department to set up the District Library due to the building’s dilapidated condition. After the resolution was passed, Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude had inspected the building.
The renovation of the old municipal building was estimated at Rs 8 crore by the department and the work was to be completed by June 2020.
However, till date the building has not been handed over to the department.
MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza said, “We have already sent the agreement copy to the Art and Culture Department for approval. However, they have not reverted back on the same. Once the department reverts back with the approval, the building will be handed over to the department.”
When asked about the temporary library provision, Braganza informed that the temporary provision process is in progress. Due to COVID pandemic, the process has got delayed.
