Elon Musk has been summoned to Paris as part of a major investigation into alleged misconduct linked to his social media platform X. Authorities are examining serious claims, including the spread of child sexual abuse material and explicit deepfake content. Former X CEO Linda Yaccarino has also been called for voluntary questioning, alongside other employees scheduled to testify as witnesses.
French prosecutors said the interviews aim to give the executives an opportunity to present their side and outline compliance efforts. It is unclear whether Musk or Yaccarino will attend. The probe began in January 2025 and intensified after a search of X’s Paris offices in February.
Initially focused on alleged algorithmic bias that may have influenced public discourse, the investigation expanded following controversies involving Grok, X’s AI chatbot developed by xAI. Authorities are examining incidents where Grok allegedly generated Holocaust denial content—illegal in France—as well as explicit deepfake images.
The case now includes allegations of complicity in distributing illegal material, including images involving minors, and manipulation of automated systems. Grok previously sparked global outrage by producing non-consensual deepfake content and a widely shared post questioning the purpose of gas chambers at Auschwitz, which it later corrected.
French officials have also contacted the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, raising concerns that the controversy may have been used to inflate the value of X and xAI ahead of a potential listing.
