Fruits and vegetables grown in the hilly areas of the State have finally found their way in the Commercial Capital.
The much-sought after mesh melons have literally flooded the city, with vendors from the hilly areas of Quepem and Canacona taluka making brisk business along roadsides in the last few days.
Like in the past, however, the vendors have expressed their resentment over the failure by the authorities to provide them a shade to carry on the business.
A vendor Prabhavati Velip told Herald that the vendors are forced to conduct business on the road side and in the scorching heat and rain in the absence of a shade or make shift shelter. “We have been demanded a temporary stall or shelter from the authorities over the last one decade, but in vain. The vendors are literally forced to sell their products from the road sides”, she added.
A couple of years ago when the BJP was ruling the state, a proposal was mooted by the then government to earmark a temporary area for the vendors to sell their produce in the city. It is learnt that the authorities had conducted a study on the subject and even the office of the Chief secretary was seized of the matter, but the make shift shelter for the vendors is yet to become a reality till date, forcing the vendors to sell their produce along road sides and near the old bus stand.
