PANJIM, SEPT 21
CCP Corporator Surendra Furtado on Tuesday decried the corporation’s plan to burden Panjimites by way of parking toll and called for clarity in the procedure adopted in awarding the pay-parking contract.
Furtado has augured, “The Government has failed to provide efficient and prompt public transport system. Therefore, it is morally wrong to burden the taxpayer by levying parking fees.”
Not too comfortable with the idea, the CCP corporator who has been very vocal about problems affecting the city voiced apprehensions on the parking fees going to the right coffers. Past records have shown how these collections have ended in private pockets, he stated.
He said the whole concept looking at the current scenario was ridiculous because in a city like Panjim government offices, shops and banks are scattered as a result of which motorists will have to pay parking toll at every halt.
Expressing suspicion over the tender award, he said the same was awarded without ascertaining the projected quantum of vehicles that would be parked and the earnings to be accrued from them.
