PORVORIM: Union Minister for Surface Transport and Shipping Nitin Gadkari stated that the existing Co-operative Act has become outdated and it needs to be modified extensively.
He was speaking as chief guest at the valedictory function of National Co-operative Conference organised by Sahakar Bharati Goa at Porvorim.
“Co-operative sector needs an act, which will encourage the co-operative societies doing commendable work and penalize those engaged in unlawful activities. The Sahakar Bharati should prepare a model Co-operative Act and submit it to the Central government and I will take the initiative to get it approved,” said Gadkari.
“Co-operative societies should register themselves as multipurpose societies and extend its scope of activities. There is good scope for cooperative societies in the field of water conservation, organic farming, etc,” he said.
“In some states, cooperative movement has become successful, while in some states it has not gained success. If the members of the co-operative sector work with integrity and sincerity, then co-operative movement will become successful,” added Gadkari.
Gadkari further said the transport department has decided to simplify the procedure of issuing driving licenses. “Driving tests will be conducted by computers and All India permits for vehicles will be issued online. Driving licenses of those persons found guilty thrice will be cancelled,” said Gadkari.
National President of Sahakar Bharati Satish Marathe said 3,000 members and 800 co-operative societies have participated in the conference. Sheetal Pande compered the programme.
