Gandhi Market traders gherao MMC CO

Demand end to the illegal sale of goods by hawkers at the market

MARGAO: Gandhi Market traders gheraoed MMC Chief Officer Y B Tawde over the illegal sale of goods by hawkers at the market.
Around 70 traders threatened the CO of huge backlash if the market inspectors failed to stop the illegal sale at the market.
Led by Babu Azgaonkar, the traders requested the MMC to keep the market free from encroachments and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
They claimed that they have been affected by the hawkers outside the market and demanded stern action against them.
Accordingly, Tawde promised to depute a market inspector during peak hours to stop the illegal trade.
“The MMC will have one market inspector, who will be paid overtime and will be delegated duties for keeping a check on the hawkers. The inspector will be posted from 7 am to 8 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm to stop the illegal trade”.
Explaining MMC’s practical difficulties, Tawde said, “We have 4 inspectors of which 2 are women and one is physically weak for field job. This is the reason we lag but we do cope up”.
Meanwhile, the traders also requested the CO to assess the tintos in the market, which have been converted into shops.
