Ganesh festival keeps Canacona police on toes

While Ganesh Chaturthi may be a festive occasion in Canacona taluka, it is also an occasion to keep Canacona police on its toes.
If Canacona Police Inspector Raju Raut Dessai is to be believed, considering taluka’s importance in view of being on world tourism map, special police teams have been keeping a watch on most of the Ganeshosthav Mandals, especially guarding the ones situated across the highway.
“A police team is round-the-clock manning the Chaudi Sarvajanik Ganeshotshav Mandal with the help of a metal detector,” said PI Dessai.
“Special armed police teams are deputed at night and other crucial gathering times to Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals at Char-Rasta, Poinguinim, Maxem,” informed PI Dessai.
Besides, police beat teams are also taking rounds in the night patrolling at other locations, especially the sensitive one, which are attended by large number of devotees.
According to PI Dessai, office bearers of the respective mandals are also briefed by Canacona police on ‘do’s and don’ts’ to avoid accidental fires or short circuits, especially since lots of fire crackers and fireworks are used, besides, the mandals are heavily decorated with lights and displays.
Since Canacona is also home to world-renowned beach at Palolem, a close watch is also maintained on the beach and other coastal fronts in the taluka, informed a police source, when pointed out that reports doing round that anti-socials may use the sea passage to create disruptions and panic during the festive celebrations in the country.
