MARGAO: There is simmering tension between neighbours, Curtorim residents and Sao Jose De Areal villagers over the dumping of garbage on the Maina-Areal road.
Locals from Curtorim protested the garbage being dumped in the jurisdiction of Curtorim panchayat and wanted the Sao Jose de Areal panchaya and the commercial complex concerned to be held responsible for the mess. There was a stand off between the two groups with Sao Jose de Areal Sarpanch Julio Monteiro and Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco gathering at the site.
The issue stemmed over the garbage disposal at Ramnigari Aral and which panchayat should be concerned with the matter. Sao Jose De Areal Sarpanch Julio Monteiro said there has to be infrastructure in place first to handle garbage — like land for garbage disposal, and that establishments should be given permissions only after such infrastructure is in place and that such establishments have facilities in place for the collection of garbage.
