CURCHOREM: Garbage and waste was set on fire behind the Church building at Curchorem main market.
Residents were surprised to find thick smoke billowing in the market area and alerted the Curchorem Fire Services, which is barely 200 metres from the site.
A fire tender went to the site and extinguished the fire. Later, Chief Officer of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council Agnelo Fernandes visited to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to Herald, Fernandes said he had taken note of the incident and would direct municipal officials to identify other areas prone to such incidents, so that necessary action can be taken before the monsoon. “Councillors must intimate me of fire prone areas so that we can take timely action,” said Fernandes.
When contacted, Ward Councilor Rocha Pereira claimed he had brought this particular problem to the notice of the chief officer but added that he (Fernandes) had not taken any action in the matter.
