VASCO: The Goa Engineering College (GEC) Farmagudi has been asked to conduct the stability test of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) owned old structures, which have been identified as dangerous on account of their dilapidated condition.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the private owners, who have been issued demolition notices have been directed to raze their old structures and at the same time have been asked to take safety precautions by fencing the area around their structures.
Fernandes informed that there are few old structures which belong to the municipality. “We have asked Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi to undertake the structure stability test and submit the report to us.” He said and added that the report will be placed at the council meeting and a decision will be taken.
When asked why the municipality is not demolishing these old structures immediately, Fernandes said, “Some buildings which belong to the municipality have been given on leases and rent and hence the council will decide on the fate of these old buildings.”
A decision on the remaining old structures belonging to private parties will be taken at a hearing before the chief officer.
Recently, MMC had issued notices to 32 unsafe private structures in Vasco directing the owners to demolish the old buildings on their own and to fence the area for the safety of people. To its surprise, it found that a few of the 32 structures identified for demolition belong to the civic body.
