The Goa Electricity Department has announced a major relief for domestic electricity consumers with single-phase connections. Under the revised guidelines, the sanctioned load for eligible consumers will now be upgraded automatically up to 5 kW based on electricity consumption recorded by their meters.
The move eliminates the need for consumers to submit online applications for routine load enhancements, making the process faster and more convenient. Officials said the automatic upgrade will be determined by actual power usage, ensuring that households receive an appropriate sanctioned load without unnecessary paperwork.
However, the relaxation applies only to single-phase domestic consumers whose required load does not exceed 5 kW. Consumers requiring more than 5 kW will have to apply for a three-phase electricity connection in accordance with the revised regulations.
The clarification was issued by Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes, who explained that the new system has been introduced to simplify procedures while ensuring electricity connections match consumers’ usage patterns.
The department believes the initiative will reduce delays, minimise manual intervention and improve service delivery. By relying on meter-recorded consumption, authorities can upgrade eligible consumers without requiring separate requests.
Consumers planning to install additional high-power electrical appliances that require a load above 5 kW must still complete the necessary application process for a three-phase connection. The revised guidelines are expected to benefit thousands of domestic consumers across Goa by making load upgrades smoother and more efficient.
